The Phatory Art Gallery

Provisional Puff/Closed Circuit

The Phatory LLC Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a solo exhibition by Gary Sherman. The exhibition opens May 20 and runs through June 13, with an artist’s reception on Thursday, May 20, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

Gary Sherman’s installation, Provisional Puff/Closed Circuit, is an oblique allegory about recent developments in American culture. Reports of intolerance, character assassination, censorship, due process violations, human rights infringements, and the conjuncture of secularism and religion that have appeared in the national news are alarming indications of a society in a state of flux.

Provisional Puff/Closed Circuit consists of a variety of surrogate forms that reference the aggregate personal, political, spiritual and cultural dynamics precipitating these societal changes. Individual characterizations in this “circuit” include Cavalieri, the feckless son; Joker, the fallow father; Castus, the fateful mother; Puff, the flamboyant dragon and his attendant stags; and Moralis, the fanatical courtesan. Each member of this haughty fraternity is represented as a composite of secular and ecclesiastical attributes.

Gary Sherman lives and works in New York. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the School of Visual Arts, where he works in the undergraduate Fine Arts Department.
