The Phatory LLC Gallery is pleased to announce “Sho’biz,” an exhibit presenting the work of Ron Gott, Jeffrey Hargrave and Moses Henderson. The exhibit begins on October 8 and runs through November 6. An artists’ reception will take place on October 8 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
The artists included in “Sho’biz” create vibrant images that explore the role that popular imagery plays in the development of cultural identity. Mr. Hargrave’s complex multi-media installations combine compositions based on African-influenced classic works of art, such as Picasso’s Les Mademoiselles D’Avignon, with imagery derived from racially stereotyped commercial imagery. Both the work of Mr. Gott and Mr. Henderson examine in a more literal manner cultural figures found in popular culture. Originally produced while working as a photojournalist covering the music scene, Mr. Gott exhibits close-cropped images of jazz, rock, and punk performers of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Mr. Henderson, on the other hand, is an itinerant artist who produces Hallmark-like images of African-American luminaries and narratives. The divergent perspectives on our culture in this show are visually compelling, sometime disturbing, reflections of some of the various legacies residing in today's culture. |
